Traumatic Brain and Head
Injuries

According to the definition developed by the
Brain
Injury Association of America, a “traumatic brain injury (TBI)
is an insult to the brain, not of a degenerative or congenital nature,
which is caused by an external physical force that may produce a
diminished or altered state of consciousness, and which results in the
disturbance of behavioral or emotional functioning”
Over one and a half million people sustain traumatic brain injuries
each year and almost one hundred thousand of these brain damaged victims
are left to cope with lifelong disabilities. Many brain injury survivors
suffer behavioral, physical, cognitive and emotional obstacles and can
need care and rehabilitation for many years to come.
While transportation accidents, which include accidents involving
automobiles, trucks, trains, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians
and scooters, account for most cases of traumatic brain injury, sports -
football, baseball, skiing, skating, and horseback riding - where
helmets are worn to protect against acquired brain injury also
contribute to this problem. Also, acquired brain injury may occur from
medical malpractice, prenatal care and birth injuries.
Persons who suffer from traumatic brain injury may be entitled to monetary compensation. It is recommended that
you seek the services of a traumatic brain injury attorney who
concentrates in this type of case, such as nationally recognized brain
injury trial attorney and New Jersey Super Lawyer for 2006,
Harrison J. Gordon, of
Gordon and Gordon P.C.where attorneys and staff are trained in helping
individuals who suffer from traumatic brain injury and their families
